The Walter Vase is used with Quiet Utility’s apple cider vinegar based attractant. The fermented scent attracts household fruit flies towards the vase.

For best results, remove competing sources such as overripe produce, food waste and drink residue.

Where should I place the Walter Vase?

Place Walter close to where fruit flies are most active. This may be near a fruit bowl, food preparation area, recycling container or food-waste bin.

Yes. Quiet Utility’s attractant is apple cider vinegar based and made specifically for use with the Walter Vase.

Why is apple cider vinegar used?

Apple cider vinegar has a fermented scent that attracts household vinegar or ferment flies. These flies naturally seek out the scents associated with fermenting fruit and other organic material.

Can I buy attractant refills separately?

Yes. Quiet Utility attractant refills are available separately for ongoing use with the Walter Vase.

What type of fruit flies is Walter designed to attract?

Walter is designed to attract the small household flies commonly found around overripe produce, food waste and fermenting liquids.

In Australia, these insects may also be called vinegar flies or ferment flies. They are usually species from the Drosophila group.

Are household fruit flies the same as Queensland fruit fly?

No. Household vinegar or ferment flies are different from Queensland fruit fly and Mediterranean fruit fly, which are larger agricultural pests.

Walter is intended for small household fruit flies associated with fermenting material.

Why do fruit flies keep returning?

Fruit flies often return because fermenting material remains somewhere nearby or another generation is already developing.

Possible sources include overripe produce, food waste, recycling, drink residue, hidden spills and organic material around drains.

When are fruit flies most active in Australia?
